Echo

Echo is my graduation project, built around a topic that is essential yet often overlooked: communication within the couple and its direct impact on a child’s social development.

To structure this project, I focused on three key concepts: parenthood, communication, and the child’s socialization process. The name Echo is intentional. It refers not only to a resonating sound, but also to the rebound between two elements—a metaphor for the parent–child dynamic. What parents express through their words, behaviors, and silences inevitably finds an echo in the child’s development.

A young concept of parenthood

It is interesting to note that in France, the term parenthood did not exist in 1930. Even the notion of maternity understood as “the mother in her parental role” only emerged in the 1960s.

It wasn’t until 1970, with the law redefining parental authority, that a shared model of parenting started to take shape. These shifts highlight how parental models evolve and how new forms of education emerge, moving away from more traditional approaches. Echo aligns with this evolution by helping young parents adopt a more conscious, dialogued, and empathetic vision of parenting.

A series designed to guide young parents

Echo takes the form of a series of educational episodes aimed at helping parents—and future parents—understand the relational dynamics that shape a child’s upbringing.

I chose a light, narrative tone, deliberately avoiding a guilt-driven or prescriptive approach. The goal is not to dictate what to do, but to open discussions and encourage reflection.

Communication and pseudo-mutuality

The first episode explores two major ideas:- Pseudo-mutuality: when a couple hides or sets aside its issues to maintain the appearance of harmony.- Communication styles: passive, aggressive, and assertive — three ways of interacting that deeply influence the family atmosphere and the child’s development.

Art direction

Visually, the project embraces a colorful, playful, and warm artistic direction, making complex or sensitive topics more accessible. Echo’s universe is friendly, modern, and engaging, inviting young parents to reflect without feeling judged.
